Fortunato No.4 premium cacao beans are some of the rarest on the planet. This rare puro nacional cacao varietal is native to Peru and genetically linked to the nacional cacao of Ecuador which was lost 100 years ago. It prefers a micro-climate unique to the high walls of the Marañón Canyon at altitudes of 3,500 to 4,100 feet, some of the highest ever reported for cacao trees. Due to the remoteness of the farms, the beans need to be transported first by foot, then burro, then mortorcycle, and finally all-terrain vehicle. The cacao beans produced by these temperamental trees are treasured for their excellent aroma and rich flavor. Despite both the obstacles of transportation and growing conditions, every precaution is taken to ensure these beans are grown with humane and ecological care. Puro nacional cacao grows naturally in the Marañón Canyon as it has for centuries. Local farmers are provided with plant starts and training, and receive premium prices for their beans.
